Props

Clock on the wallimage

It acts as an establishing prop as it gives the audience knowledge of the time when the displayed action was taking place. The black is also symbolic of the darkness of the plot line and therefore is in keeping with the typical conventions of a horror film.  It has a Paris theme which also matches the rest of the set in this location. The font of the numbers is also quite curly and therefore has connotations of warped or unusual action, it I also similar to the font used for the credits providing links and fluidity for the audience.

They provided a source of dim light which worked well in the scene as a fucntional prop. They also have connotations of innocence- this connotes to the small lights and also the flowers on the lights- and implies that the character is young and most likely female. It gives the audience an impression of the character and implies that they are innocent and vulnerable, both typical conventions of a character in the horror genre.

Bunting & Dream catcher image

Both of these have similar connotations as the fairy lights, therefore also holding the same character implications and building up the first impression of the character. The dream catcher also foreshadows the events and storyline of the film, by being nightmarish. It creates enigmas for the audience such as: “why do they have a dream catcher? -Has this happened before?”, “Is the character naive, spiritual or a believer in the magic of the dream catcher”, and “Is this whole sequence a dream?”.

Hanging Heart image

This has connotations of innocence as well as acting as a metaphorical barrier to the world outside the room. It possibly also increases the audience enagagement as they are lead to not be in favour of opening the door. The colour pink deviates from the black and white colour scheme. Finally, it acts as a functional prop in creating suspense and being symbollic by the way it swings on the door handle and creating an eerie feel.

We did not use many props in our film as we didn’t want it to distract from the action taking place. We also didn’t feel that our plot line constituted the need for props and therefore we stuck to simple props which acted as decoration for the set.
