Question 2

How does your media project represent particular social groups?

In my film we used 4 of Vladimir’s character types : male dominance, narrative catalyst, damsel in distress and age. These all represent different areas of the social group of teenagers, gender and their place in society in terms of stereotypes. In this bitesize I analysed these areas and how we used them:

Positive/ Negative stereotypes:

The use of a female as the damsel in distress is a negative stereotype as it objectifies women and implies they are the weaker sex who are in need of protection and are easily manipulated into fear and naivety.

The use of the dominant males is also a negative stereotype for similar reasons in terms of implying that men are more powerful than women and could potentially be more likely to cause harm than a female to a male. It shows that men exercise their power over females.

It has a positive stereotype of teenagers sticking together and not abandoning their friends.

There is also a positive stereotype of teenagers being inquisitive, curious and open-minded by the use of the opening sequence and the investigation downstairs.
